2000 + Active Directory Domain

I have a computer on the network that needs to be renamed.

Right now, let's say the computer is named "apple" and it is on the domain "domain.com".

It needs to be changed so that the computer is named "orange".

In the Active Directory, I disabled the old computer (apple) and created a new computer (orange).

Whenever I try to change the name on the computer, it asks for the username and password of an account with permission to rename this computer in the domain.

I use the administrator u/p and get a message that says it failed and that "The account already exists."

Any ideas?

i may be wrong but don't you have to change the work station name before you change the active directory name other wise the work station checks and finds the name in use

Active Directory doesn't give me an option for renaming the computer. What I did was create a new computer in Active Directory and disable the old one.

EDIT: I see what you're saying, sorry. Ok, I will try it that way.

Cool, that worked. Thank you! I didn't realize AD would add the computer itself when it saw it on the network. Very cool.

It probably seems like a dumb question but I actually have no training or experience with 2000 server / Active Directory / etc.

I basically got thrown into this position and I am trying to figure things out on my own just by learning.
