I think it will be fine, I used the XP Upgrade to go from 98se to XP, it should detect your previous install of windows and then install.

Yes you can. I installed WindowsXP from Win98SE just using the XP upgrade.
Btw, I had clean installed win98SE using the upgrade for that as well but was asked for my win95 for a compliance check previous to that particular install. Last edited by Driftwood50; 08-21-2004 at 12:56 PM. |

First, you should check your machines specs to see if XP will run on it (ram: 256meg min/512m prefered); (CPU: min. 250mhz)
Yes, you can use the upgrade version (doing a clean install will give better results than doing an upgrade type install)

thanks for all the replys.
I'm getting ready for a new build so the min requirements are no problem. I just wanted to make sure i can get by with the upgrade version of XP Thanks |

The upgrade version and the "full" version are identical except the first is cheaper and requires a previously installed version of Windows. Functionally, they're the same and the use of the term "upgrade" has caused confusion.

If this is for a new build the OEM versions of Windows are cheaper than the upgrades: http://www.newegg.com/app/searchProd...XP&Order=price

According to my upgrade box you can go from 98, 98se, and ME, to XP Home. But not 2K. I think that if you run the oem version from within windows it acts as an upgrade disk, but someone else will have to confirm this.

Doing a clean install is the best route, whether a 98 upgrade disk will qualify,I don't know.
A full version of 95,98,ME does qualify. If you upgrade you can upgrade from 98 or ME,but not from 95. |
