Hi,

well, the reason why Win2K runs so slow is because the PC hasn't got enough RAM. 96 MB is pretty little for it. 128 MB should be the minimum for 2K. So you could leave 2K installed and upgrade the RAM.

Anyways, to answer your question: You do need to format the hard drive in order to install Win98 again. Before you do that, be sure you saved all the data, as they will be lost otherwise.

When you're ready, boot from the Windows 98 CD and choose "command prompt with cd-rom support" (or similar).
Go to the \win98 subfolder (with the cd command, like cd X:\win98 where X: is the drive letter of your optical drive), and run FDISK.
Hit "Y" for "yes" at the beginning to support large partitions (for FAT32). If the partitions are FAT32 and you don't want to change the sizes of the partitions, you can skip the next part and continue with formatting.
Remove the existing partitions and create new ones. Then leave FDISK.

Use the FORMAT command to format the partitions. Once formatted, reboot the PC, boot again from the Win98 CD, this time you choose "run Win98 setup" and follow the instructions on the screen.

U can't just format HDD using Win98, cuz he just installed NTFS. 98 using FAT32, it won't see NTFS HDD. Like RJ mentioned, you have to repartition the hard drive.

Well, it is possible that he didn't change the file system, as Win2K can also handle FAT32.
Therefore I wrote: "If the partitions are FAT32 and you don't want to change the sizes of the partitions, you can skip the next part and continue with formatting."

RAM is pretty cheap, I would upgrade the RAM if you could and see if the HD needs to be defragged. Other than that reinstall 98.
