Problem on another comp
Problems on my cousin's other comp:
1.As soon as he starts up, his taskbar on bottom of the screen loads up, but it continues loading up when you put the mouse on it, so you're not able to click the "start" menu. 2. His Dlink doesn't seem to work for him no more after he did a spyware/adware scan on it, his d-link is called "D-Link Xtreme" something like that, not sure on what's it called. 3. (Upstairs of his comp) - His other comp upstairs which also uses the same modem, works. I checked and it was online, but when she opens window explorer, it wouldn't connect any websites. So the D-link doesn't work to go online for anything. |

1) Do both computers have current antivirus protection?
2) Does the computer upstairs connect to the Internet at all? [with a regular browser, IE or other] 3) Does powering down/waiting a few minutes/powering up the DLink router help? On the cable/DSL modem, is the indicator light showing a good connection on the cable/DSL end? [usually, if service is interrupted by the provider (for repairs, etc.) that light will either go off or blink = a steady light usually indicates that the cable/DSL modem is receiving well from the provider]. . . . 1. I checked and they had Mcafee.
2. The upstairs connects to the internet, it uses the same modem as the downstairs one since its wireless. 3. Nope, he has tried none work. I read the manual of the dlink and it said that blinking is good, even though it doesn't stop blinking. |

Explicit - is the computer in your other thread the downstairs computer, and the cousin's computer in this thread the upstairs computer? And they share the Internet with a DLink Air-Extreme series wireless router?
If so, then the infection on the downstairs computer may have spread to the upstairs computer. When you get a working set of floppies for the FPROT antivirus, power-off your router while you try to clean them with antivirus tools. That way they won't keep infecting each other, and can't get fresh infections from the Internet while you're still trying to remove the current infections. You're going to need up-to-date patches for those computers before you can re-connect them to the Internet. If you can acquire a Windows Security Update CD, that will help a lot - as it can be run off-line. They take a week or so to arrive in the mail, but you might be able to find a friend who already has one, and can lend it to you. To order one for yourself, visit the microsoft.com site and search for "Windows Security Update CD". When you're sure the computers are virus/spyware clean, you can try a repair install of IE (you can use Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel, or visit the Tools menu of "System Information" in your Accessories/System Tools folder on your Start/Programs menus). ---------------- If the computer upstairs can boot to Safe Mode, you can try a full system antivirus scan from there (while disconnected from any networks!). Did your cousin set up WPA encryption when he set up his wireless network? If not, he needs to read the manual & get that set up - unless he enjoys being hacked. Not a terribly safe wireless world if the firewall and WPA encryption aren't set up. There are wireless security guides in that same guide section of PC Mechanic that I mentioned in your other thread. Read the guides a few times if they don't seem clear at first reading - wireless isn't the simplest work in whole world. . . . Gary |

Nah we live in a separate house, both his computers don't work so I'm helping him out here. I'll try to work at it next week and see if i can fix it with the advice you have given.
Thanks. |
