Windows 98SE Machine Now Takes Literally 14 Minutes To Boot
I had my Compaq for over 4 years. It's a PIII 550Mhz with 128mb of RAM. It's not the greatest, but it worked fine. A couple days ago, it started running like crap. The hard drive makes some weird noises, everything is really slow and unstable, and it's taking 14 minutes from the time the computer comes on to the time it shows my desktop. I tried running some spyware finders, and there are a couple, but I had those for a while without any problems. Think my hard drive is beginning to fail?

Most compaqs in that age group have seen have seagate hard drives. Go to seagates website and download the diagnostic utility. Run them and see what it finds out about your drive. If all is good you might want to update your AV and check for virus and trojans.

You could try the bootmenu and go for a bootlog. That may show some of the slow stuff. But if you have some noise it is more likely the drive is having problems.

If it's not a Seagate, it is likely a Quantum - and Maxtor's tools will diagnose them. Hard drive diags is the FIRST thing I'd try in this case.
