Computer keeps locking up
I cannot figure out the problem... My computer locks up when I watch movies, and now it seems to lock up when I play Jetfighter V. I've never had it lock up with any other game.
Anyone have any suggestions? This thing is pissing me off! |

Have not changed anything as far as hardware... I thought it was Nero, but I don't think it is now. If I remember correctly, it would do it with just the OS loaded. It did it with SP1 and now SP2.

I don't know what to do, but you can try to disable "nerocheck" in 'msconfig'

ok..that's ok...probably you are using an older verion of Nero...but Nero shouldn't be the problem anyway, but it was worth trying.....
you can try to replace your grphics card though |

what do you mean by "locks up" does the screen freeze? can you ctrl-alt-del out of it? does it crash to the desktop?
Also what are your system specs? (I don't mean to sound demanding, I just thought this might help us diagnose the problem easier) |

Locks up as in, does nothing... screen freezes, keys do nothing, sounds freeze as well... Classic description of "Lock Up"

it sounds almost like some kind of IRQ conflict almost. what kind of hardware cards do you have installed (i.e. PCI or AGP cards)?
Try removing all except the graphics card and see what happens.. if you still have the problem then try using a different graphics card. |

I've got a my video card, wirelss adapter, modem, sound, and firewire. I've tried all different things... Just hoping you guys may come up with a solution other than the video card. The video card was my main suspect, but I did not want to have to buy another one since this one is damn near new. Guess my video card is not compatible with my MB. Any recommendations? I'd like to stay in the $150 range. Right now I have a Sapphire Radeon 9600 SE(256)... Thinking about a 9600XT(256).

Also, every now and again when I insert a CD, the computer will lock up. I have not had it do it lately after I messed with the AutoPlay feature. Would the vid card have anything to do with that?

Make sure you have latest version of direct x. Make sure you have latest drivers for video and sound cards.
You can see what version of directx you have by going to start, run and type dxdiag |

Do you have a sound card or are you using the sound built into the mobo?
Some times they can conflict if you have both. On my computer I disabled the sound codecs etc on the mobo through the BIOS when I installed my audigy card. Also, did you check your hardware under device manager to see if anything has ! next to it to indicate it's not working properly? What are you using for OS? Everything is working fine in device manager.
I had this problem when I ran onbaord sound only... Now I have an Audigy LS and I have disabled onboard sound in the BIOS. |

Well, can you at least borrow some parts from someone else ? Video card first, if you replace it with another one, see if the problem goes away. I'm not entirely convinced it's the video card, so I want to avoid you buying another one (or RMA'ing it) and then still having the problem. Can you check the cpu and mother board temperatures ? If not, you can use Speedfan for this.

MB and CPU temps are under control... No problem there. I do have a video card I can borrow, but not for a day or so. I've troubleshooted just about everything but the video card. I have had this same problem with 2 different MB's(same model), 2 different processors, and 2 different types of RAM. I have not tried pulling one stick on either set, but I don't think that is the problem. I've checked my temps on Speedfan, Core Center, PC Wizard, and in the BIOS, they are all pretty close and consistant.
