Win 98 SE missing files

I'm working on a friends computer, which I installed Windows 98 SE on a few months ago. Anyway, they'd like to connect to the web via dialup now but, because of several files that were missing from installation, I can't even get into Dial-Up Networking. The files are:

vnetbios.vxd
vredir.vxd
msnp32.dll
dfs.vxd

The CD didn't seem to have them for some reason so I googled and downloaded them but am not sure where to put them? Do I just paste them into the Windows or Windows/System folder? Will that then fix Dial-Up Networking. There the only files I get errors for, there could be more and I wouldn't know.

Thanks in advance for any help, JTH

you can always reinstall dialup networking

its been a while since i used 98 but you can go to where you select what windows components you want installed (i think its in add/remove programs), uncheck dial up networking click ok, and then go back and re check it. this should uninstall and reinstall DUN

Very close, rios - you must reboot after unchecking it and before rechecking it. Dialup networking is found in Communications. The 98 CD must be in the drive or the cabs must be on the hard drive.

GLC, I will try that when I get a chance to work on their PC again but I think there could be a fault in the disc or something. I'm pretty sure as I reinstall Dial-Up Networking it prompts me for files it can't find on the CD. What should I do?

Thanks again!

I don't think you can legally Down Load a Win 98 CD.

The files may be available on the web.

JTH: Copy the contents of the \win98 folder on the cd to a folder on the hard drive, and try pointing it to there when it asks for the CD. Make sure if the computer has 98SE on it, you are using a 98SE cd and not a 98FE, or vice versa.

Mrtickle, what is this SFC checker program and will it replace missing files even if I'm offline on this machine (no Dial-up Networking remember!)?

GLC, I will try copying the Win 98 folder from the CD to the hard disk.

[. . . info: SFC stands for System File Checker. You can find it on most Win98 installations in Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tool/System Information ... and from the "Tools" menu, select System File Checker. The short way to start it is from the Start/Run box, type "sfc" (without the quotes). It can extract and replace system files from either .cabs on your Win98 CD or the .cabs on your hard drive, or from any location you point it to. . . As far as I know, it doesn't perform Internet searches, so all of the extract/copy locations need to be local/offline. . . ]
