Hi Members !
XP is the OS I use. Older Dad doesn't like change and has stayed with ME on drive C:.-My problem--I have Windows 98 2nd just laying around. My first computer (166)had 95 on it. Back then I upgraded to 98. I have had this new computer for 3 years. I was wanting to put 98 on my drive H: . I have started the computer and quickly put in the 98 CD. The computer just goes to the menu showing which OS I want to log in to XP or ME. I hear the CD spin and that is all. I have NO response on the 98 CD.--- Does anyone have an idea for me to install 98. Maybe I am cooked and will not be able to install it.-O,---i have 2 free gigs on drive H: P.S.: drive C: is ME drive E: is XP drive F: Is Windows 2000 PRO drive H: is where I want to install 98 se back to post 1:30 AM |

You can make xp look like older version of windows by right clicking on the start menu, choose properties, click 'classic' mode. Every user can have this configured to their liking etc.

Hi ! antgross@pacbell.net !
Thanks for your reply. I did what you said. START>PROPERITES and changed to the old desk top. I put in the 98se CD. It started and brought up a box (6in. X 7in.). Here is what it said with 4 options: #1. Interactive CD Sampler #2. Cool Video Clips #3. Browse This CD #4. Add/Remove Software Hummm, which one to install 98. Well, I went to 'Browse This CD '----- when I did a small box with a red circle with an X on it. It said " Please Insert your Win 98 CD ROM "---OK or Cancel I pressed OK and popped the CD out and then reinserted it. It spen again and I went back to click on " Browse This CD ". I did this . Guess what ?---- that box popped up saying " Please Insert your Win 98 CD ROM ". I did this over and over and gave up. I went to 'restart' and started up in Windows ME and not XP no more. I put the CD in. It started up and brought up that 6in X 7in box with the same 4 options as it did in XP. I clicked on ' Browse This CD "---- NOW-- up popped a long rectangle box. It had a warning of sorts. A triangle with ! in the middle of the triangle. It said : This CD ROM is from an older version of Windows than the one you are presently using. Setup functionality from this disk will be disabled.---------------------Wellllll, I Ed out the box and pulled the 98 CD out. The computer stayed in ME.------- Soooo , I just don't know where I go from here. One thing I might do on Friday late afternoon, is with the computer off, I will put in the 98 floppy start up disk and then turn on the computer. It might tell me to insert the 98 CD. If it does, I will see what happens. I just need to get to the H: Drive where I want to put 98. Maybe the 98 SE being just an upgrade and not the full version might have something to do with it , but I don't see that I can't install a 98 SE upgrade in the H: drive.-------------------Thanks Don P.S.: back to check out my post about 4:30 PM Central (who cares Don ! ) |

to do a full install from an upgrade disk you need an original copy of a previous windows OS (in this case 98fe or 95)
is your bios set to boot from cd? if you can't do that for whatever reason, you can always use a floppy bootdisk: http://www.bootdisk.com |

If you are trying to do a multi boot and include 98 -from what I understand the process involves starting with the oldest OS first as the best way to do it. You are going in the reverse order.
But, you can still do what you want - check out the article below, it tells you how to do it, scroll down a bit to the section titled "How to Install Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me in a Windows XP, Windows 2000, and MS-DOS, or a Windows NT and MS-DOS Multiple-Boot Configuration" http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;217210 edit. hmm - in re reading the article you can NOT do what you want "You can configure your computer to start Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT, and either Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me. However, you cannot configure a computer to multiple boot any combination of Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me because Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me use the same boot file. Therefore, multiple booting Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me at the same time is not supported. " So you'll have to choose between ME and 98

I wasn't suggesting that you set up a dual boot. I merely was telling you how to make XP look like win98 that's all without having to set up two OS.
