Question Error when xp shuts down

Get an error titled: 'Driver Power State Error'. I just reinstalled xp pro using the format before reinstall method because it could not install a firewire card. I have been reinstalling applications. Then when I shut down the computer it would not turn off and kept restarting. The 'restart' sellection under 'my computer/properties etc has since been desellected. And then the error noted above occurred. The error message said to get windows updates so I installed SP2. Still get error during shut down. Have to push the 'reset' button to continue. The error message said to remove any just added hardware [none] and software.

Is there any way of telling which software I need to remove. In 'my computer/manage/event viewer/applications I see two red errors and 4 yellow warning errors. Can I use these to find out more about which software to reinstall? I sent the red errors into Mirosoft help place.

Also, the error states to disable 'memory options' in the bios such as 'cashing' or 'shadowing'. How do I get to the bios system?
I can use F8 to start 'adavance start up options'. Is the bios in there somewhere? Orrrrrrrrrrr am I stuck with another reinstall of Windows Xp pro?? Thanks for your attention.
Doug

For accessing the bios, You may need to use del, F1, F2 or F10 (depending on your computer). Make sure you start pressing it as soon as the computer starts, my chance to press del on my PC is usually gone by the time the screen has powered up (quick boot). As for your problem, is the Firewire card present in a PCI slot ? It may be defective and you mentioned you couldn't install it.

Thanks Mesaeus. No the firewire is not in the machine. I did not work in another pci slot either but it did work on another xp pro computer. After reinstalling xp pro in this machine it kept rebooting and got the above error. I will try looking in the bios for removing memory but I suspect the problems is some sort of software error with all the apps I installed. Would an error number from my blue error page help? The error page comes up each time I shut down the system. Can't get beyond the blue page. The reset button on the front of the computer reboot xp ok. If I want to shut down the computer I have to turn it off with the power switch on the back. I am following the instructions on the blue page. Have installed sp2. I don't think it is a hardware problem cause there is no new hardware. Note Thanks for your attention. Just ran Pestpatrol and it found no pests. Norton System Works gives it a clean bill of health including windoctor, speed disk, antivirus etc. - all ok. Chkdsk shows ok. Ran spybot also - no problem. Comment please.

Yes, it would be handy to know exactly which STOP errors you are getting. Tell us the number after the "STOP", it will be something like "0x0000001A" or "0x0000008E" etc.

Well Maesaus, xp must have fixed itself cause the error message is gone. It was always coming up at shut down. I don't know if I did anything in particular to solve the problem. I did run some maintenance apps a couple days ago. Then yesteday I put Pestpatrol back in the start up menu.
Thanks for your help. Au revoir.
