How do I wipe my laptop HD clean?

Hi guys, this has been bugging me for a while now. I tried to install Windows XP Pro to replace my Windows XP Home on my Dell 5150 Laptop, but now when the computer boots up it ask me which OS I would like to run. The original plan was to wipe my HD clean and start from scratch with XP Pro, but it seems everytime I select the partition to overwrite it just puts another copy of windows on it without removing all my program files, etc. What are the steps I need to follow to wipe my HD completely CLEAN and start from scratch with just an OS. Thanks for all replies.

Make yourself a start up floppy and use that to format your HD, then do a clean install of XP.

Easiest way would be to boot with the win XP pro cd. When it starts it will say that it has found a partition and whatnot. There will be an option to delete all partitions or certain partitions (depending how you have your hard drvie setup) Delete the partition, it will ask you to format...blah blah blah, you're on easy street. Hope that helps.
