This should do it: http://support.microsoft.com/default...279765&sd=tech

Did you mean to say that you've just installed SP2?

I'd recommend password protecting your accounts, if you are connected to the Internet for any length of time - it's a hacker's dream to have accounts available without passwords. At the least, I'd recommend password-protecting the Administrator account, and changing the others to limited users.

yes it is legit,

no SP1, its a PC that hasn't been updated due to owners ignorance and 56k dialup
the kids filled it full of spy/adware so i'm cleaning it up and
updating it for them as a favour.

Might want to fast-forward to SP2, at least they'd get a little extra protection from the new pop-up, "drive-by downloads", and firewall features. Might recommend that they try something like ZoneAlarm if they've had trouble with trojans. They shouldn't mind AdAware, either, since it's free.

Good luck with your project - I have a feeling if they're set in their ways you'll be seeing that computer again

If they have a favorite screensaver, it should still run OK after it's assigned times in "Display Options", even if they use the Welcome screen to logon (to get it to replace the generic logo [pre-logon], search your .scr files & use the Registry edit you found in your last post). I don't know of a single file which stores the Welcome screen - only the option for either using it or using the Ctrl-Alt-Del method of loggin on. I'd guess it's likely a subroutine & part of the OS.

That's a nice list of security tools, so perhaps you'll get some rest after all

got a feeling i'll have to go direct to MS on this one.
finding solutions on such an old SP is proving difficult.
i've posted on the MS windows xp community, so i'll see what they suggest and if all else fails DL SP2. i just hope SP2 does'nt create more probs.

Hi again

I thought that you'd figured most of the questions already, but I may have misunderstood... If you'd like to have the Welcome screen back, use the instructions from my first reply's MSKB link: & here's the easy part =
"Log on to the computer as an administrator.
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
Click Change the way users log on or off.
If it is not already selected, click to select the Use the Welcome screen check box."
---That's all you have to do to get the Welcome screen back.

The default screensaver (Logon.scr) runs if no one logons on by clicking on their User icon, but that can be changed by following the instructions you found in your link with the Registry edit that let's your .scr screensaver take the place of Logon.scr. The only difference that edit makes is that your favorite screensaver can now run when no one logs on, rather than the default screensaver. After logging on, screensaver behavior is up to that user (unless you specifically set a Policy that it can't be changed). The Welcome screen stays put, it's just "behind" whatever screensaver is assigned: and it reappears as soon as the keyboard or mouse "wake" it up.

If I missed anything, let me know which detail you still need help with.

to clarify i'll explain futher....

everything was fine until i downloaded SP1 (not SP2)
somewhere along the way i think the SP has changed some values beacause of MS security issues as we all know.

so when i select the 2 ticks for enable welcome screen and fast user switching I get the log of windows XP type box come up when i log off
but when i choose either switch user or log off i get the classic logon prompt saying that "the computer is in use and has been locked only admin can unlock"
I am admin.I can access all the accounts because they do not have passwords, but only in the classic logon style where you have to type each name rather than click an icon on the welcome screen.
There are 4 accounts. they are all set to comp admin none to limited.
does comp admin mean the "administrator"?

the computer is part of a network via a switch and router and did set it's self up to be part of the network(it recognises my other comp in network places)
which i did not want.
I also had webshots installed but i have found that it will only work on the account you DLd it to.when i try to run it an error message comes up and you have to go to each account and repair webshots to make it work for that account or download it specifically for that account.
that may have corrupted the screensaver values because i had only set up one account to work properly before i DLd SP1 as mentioned in MSKB.
i think the first link below has somthing to do with the problem
when i add the logon.scr value it still makes no diffrence.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;242917
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

what I want is to get the welcome screen back.
unlock the computer if it is locked ( i never locked it in the first place)

Is there a way to uninstall SP1 and start again?
I cannot get support from MS cuz it is an OEM product.

You should have the option to uninstall SP1 if you choose - it should be listed in Add/Remove in Control Panel. Not sure it would clear it up or not. I'm surprised that your selecting of the "Use the Welcome Screen" doesn't work.

You could try a few different screensavers just to see what happens, like the MSKB article mentions. . . And you could even try a "repair" install - or - if you're feeling lucky - try SP2.

If you briefly assign passwords to each account, does the Welcome screen work then?

Interesting case you have . . . Gary
