disk defragmenter
Hello all,
I am running a Windows 98se operating system! Everything functions fairly well except for one little problem.......If I go through my computer and then properties to get to disk tools to run disk defragmenter it will not run and locks up the computer....... if I go through the start menu and then to disk defragmenter then it seems to work fine the first time..... but if I try to use it twice in a row or twice without rebooting then it also locks up the computer......... any idea what is causing this or how to correct the problem....?????? Thanks, Wolfsbar

Hi Wolfsbar
I like to recommend defragmenting hard drives, especially large ones (which is most of them nowadays), in Safe Mode. It just avoids a lot of conflicts or resource problems that can occur in normal mode. It may be true that with enough hard work, we could get your defrag to run OK from My Computer, but I imagine if everything else is stable and running well, the Safe Mode option might do. It should work every time. Just to be extra cautious, you could also run antivirus/antispyware scans just to be sure that system resources aren't disappearing for the wrong reasons. . . . Gary |

I always close every running program that I can before running defragmenter. Even as far as closing my dsl connection. Resources are usually in the 80% range or so........ So I don't think that is the problem...... but I haven't tried to run it from safe mode.......I will try that and let you know......

Hello JTh,
Thanks for the information...... not only is the win me defrag quicker but it seemed to of solved the problem that I was having with the defrag locking up my system......... have defragmented all 8 partitions with no problems what so ever...... and 4 times quicker then win 98 defrag......would still be defraging the first partition...... Thanks, Wolfsbar |
