XP installation question

Hey guys,

I read somewhere in the forums that XP can only install if you have an 137GB HD or more. Is that completely true? Because I went to Disk Management and it says I have 2.34GB of used space and 8.50GB of free space. I added this up and came up with 10.34GB. This doesn't add up to me so I'm guessing that you can install XP on any amount of space that you have. Although I could be wrong, so, can anyone put me right?

TIA...

Thats is the maximum size for a partition with a SP1 installer, I think, although I installed XP onto a 20gig drive.

Completely false. Obviously the OS(and BIOS) have limitations on disk size but it doesn't mean the OS will only install if you have so-and-so disk space.

As said, it's false. What you have read is this:

Windows XP Original does not recognize hard drives with 137GB or more. So 137 is the maximum size of the partition.
Service Pack 1 breaked that barrier, so with Windows XP SP1 or Windows XP SP2 there is no other limitation for the hard drive size than the maximum that NTFS allows, which is 2 TB.

Aaaah. Now I understand. So if you just bought yourself a copy of XP Pro on disk which logically wouldn't have any Service Packs on it because you would get them later, you'd be able to install it on virtually any volume? Now it's making sense lol Thanks WTBF

EDIT: Lol, posted just before I replied RJ. So -that's- what it was. I was just thinking about it now and ended up confusing myself again

Most any XP Pro or Home disk you buy today comes with SP1 as part of the install. SP2 hasn't shown up yet except as an upgrade.

Normally uptodate cd's come with the service pack on it, such as my '2002 version' of XP home comes with SP1. I seem to have made a typo, I meant without SP1.

But if you do have an older Windows XP disc that really is the original version without any service pack, then you can slipstream a service pack and burn a new CD. That way you'll have a Windows XP SP2 CD.

If you try to install Windows XP Original on a hard drive > 137 GB .. I believe you will be able to create a 137 GB partition rather than not being able to use it at all.
