Angry 98- can't open saved word files?

hey all,
having a problem opening word files after saving from the internet. the icon is IE for the files instead of a word doc icon and when i try to open one it opens a file download window that just keeps flashing quickly on my screen and never opens the file. any ideas?

Please go into your Windows Explorer folder options, and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types" - and tell us what the exact extension is for these files in question. If they are truly Word files, they should be .doc.

glc,
i unchecked "hide extensions for known file types" and the files are .doc. but the icon is a big "E". the only way it shows up as a "W" for word file is if i save as .rtf. That way it will open.

If you feel the files are safe (you could always run an antivirus scan first), then go to one of the .doc files with the IE icon, right-click on it while also pressing the CTRL key = this should pop up an option box containing the "Open With" item in it. Choose to open with MS Word (if it's not listed you will have to browse to find it "winword.exe"), and place a checkmark in the little box that says "always open with this program" (or something to that effect). That should re-associate MS Word with .doc files.
