Xp cannot boot-missing system32 folder

the problem is with my friends. At first a person was using his pc normally, then turned it off, on the pc/restart then the message:
windows cannot boot due to missing folder:
windows\system\system32.

I thought it was just one case, but it happen to nearly 10 people within 2 days. From desktop to laptop. Now I know something is not right. Is there a virus that can delete the files. Those affected are knowlegable enough not to disturb the windows folder.
What is the actual cause of this problem? I could clean install, but the problem for the laptop, the person needs important files. For desktop, I just slave the Hd to any pc get the files thats it.
Another problem, someone bought a pc with bios administrator password alredy installed, so I could not arrange boot order. Not only that, the mobo manual was never included, and the mobo version could not be detected by looking at the mobo. Maybe some cheap mobo. I could see the chipset. If I knew which jumper to flash the bios I would do it. But since there is no clear diagram, I cannot do anything.

Try removing the battery for a while, that should clear the BIOS.

I was able to salvage the data off my laptop harddrive with an external usb hd case for 2.5" drives when it lost its MBR.

I'd certainly include checking for viruses as part of any repair with missing files. Viruses delete files all the time [they are, in fact, very fond of deleting files from their antivirus counterparts, if they get the chance]

mystvearn, get hold of the XP CD and boot from it. Select R and then when the command prompt comes up, type: chkdsk /p and when that has finished then: fixboot.
I had exactly this problem and it was almost certainly caused by a virus.
