xp desktop popup removal

On bootup desktop comes up then a pop up trying to get me to signup for something.
How do I prevent this?

Start by scanning your computer with up to date versions of Adaware and Spybot S&D. Also scan for virusses, you can use the online Trend Micro virus scanner.

If all this doesn't get rid of it, then run HijackThis and post the log here and we'll see if we can do it manually. But please try the other stuff first.

Loaded both utilities.
Ad-Aware is great and removed many cookies . Did not solve Pop Up issue.
Hijak This - solved problem by removing two items
