defrag locks down system

using xp home , i installed sp-2 , after install which went well i then started to clean it up, disk cleanup went ok, then on defrag it partially worked then locked down, couldnt get into task mgr. so had to do a hard shutdown, re-started in safe mode and the same thing happened. i checked for viri , ran ad-aware and it was clean, there has been nothing installed except her scanner-printer failed on a print job and i removed it and re installed(this was before sp2) it works now but she had not defragged since this happened so not sure if that had anything to do with this-don't think it should however. any ideas?

Claude, check in Device manager, anything there? If not, I'm wondering if it might the Windows Security Center Manager. I know that when I first installed McAfee's Security Center, it acted up on me, and caused a lot of lockups and so forth. I'm only speculating here, but can't hurt to check it out.thorlo6
