Something accesses my harddrive constantly
I really don't like XP, but I thought with the advent of SP2 i would install it and see if I liked it any better. I reformated my harddrive and put a fresh copy of XP Pro on it. I have found workarounds for most of the annoyances I don't like, but my harddrive accesses constantly, maybe once every 5 seconds or so. With Win 98 it would only access when i wanted it to. I would really like to cut this off as I have a relatively noisy Seagate 80GB SCSI Drive attached to an Adaptec 19160 controller and it is very annoying. Does anyone have any ideas? Heck, I don't even know what it is doing.

It sounds like you need more ram.
XPpro really loads a lot of stuff in the background so you could try closing programs out to see what happens. If the constant accessing stops you'll know you need another stick of memory.

Carl, did you already install SP2 or is it still downloading (in the background) ? Windows SP2 will be downloaded in the background by default, and that might be constantly accessing your hard disk.

256MB of RAM is enough not to have constant hard drive thrashing. I don't quite think that the download of a windows update can cause as much thrashing as your describe. Have you adjusted your windows pagefile size or some such tweak? If so you should let windows adjust the size of your page file.
In addition, you should take a closer look at what's starting (use msconfig) and get an idea of what could cause so much data to swap so much. It could be anything from a P2P program to a virus scan set to run a comprehensive scan on boot, or even a background defragmenter. Speaking of which, a defragment should alleviate thrashing caused by fragments spread all the drive. HTH |

File Indexing
It's been a long time but I'd take a look at indexing. If you're running a stand-alone you probably don't need it.
You might also take a look at Blackviper. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm |
