win 98se unofficial service pack.

i just installed the unofficial service pack which i got on the recommendation of a friend.
but after installing the service pack 98se hangs after showing the boot screen.
i booted in safe mode and removed the srvice pack but still cannot boot in normal mode.after few attempts i gave up and thought of formatting the c drive.

now i booted the pc from cdrom and tried to run the setup it says that all the data on the on the hard drive ( complete hard drive , om al;l partitions) will be removed.

pls tell me what to do ?

Exit the current setup. Then look at the thread in the following link & see if the over-the-top is something you can do (you need a source for the .cab files, either a Windows installation CD, or the .cabs on the hard drive [sometimes found in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs]) http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=70846

If the details look like they match your situation, you should be able to reinstall without losing your data, or having to reinstall your programs. You will, however, need to visit Windows Update for Security patches.
. . . Gary

[P.S. ...a Recovery Disk is usually not a full installation disk, it is usually a disk image that will indeed repartition and reformat your hard drive, erasing all current data]

The guy that fixed my comp says not to download the service pack. Like someone said in my post before, that Microsoft only has updates for NT,XP,etc..not 98 anymore.

I booted my comp from a CD rom as well, but I didnt lose any of the folders that were saved in my comp, just the program to open.
