XP Home splash screen lockup on laptop
A friend of mine recently turned on his Compaq laptop and the OS boots to the slash screen and sits indefintely. It is running SP1 and he says that he did not recently add hardware or change anything. I even tried booting in safe mode and the last known working configuration. Both take me back to the splash screen and no further. Is there anything else that I can try to get to the desktop so that I can scan for viruses and spyware?

Have you tried booting to safemode? If not your best bet would be a repair.

do a format or try to repair xp by inserting the install disc and follow the insructions to repair
