Formating Xp

When installing windows xp professional, is there anyway to install it withount re formating your whole computer ? The reason im asking is my brother has a bunch of files on my computer that he doesnt want to be lost or moved withount his knowledge. I am currently running windows 98, another reason im pushing to get xp is because i just got doom 3 . which requires xp.

also, are there any good cd key finders out there withount a risk of viruses ?

and thanks for that reference ghost. I was just wondering if you had to do anything besides defrag and scan disk before upgrading ? I Dont want to lose any documents etc. how do i avoid this ?

p.s. i plan on buying xp since you have pointed my errors out. i feel real bad for trying to exploit this fine forum.
