I haven't had any trouble with SP2 so far, and I'd recommend installing it. That way you'll have a built-in firewall and won't have to worry about it.

I suppose it depends on what you'll be doing with your PC. Do you like file sharing?

No. You only heared about the bad. Bad things are always the first things everyone hears. If someone has problems he/she will post here. If there are no problems, no reason to post.
So, time for you to hear about the good things about SP2.
Look here: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=107037

There are way more people who didn't have problems with SP2 than the ones who do. And nothing is perfect, there are always problems with every product. I don't know of anything that everyone is happy with.

So, since there is way more good about SP2 than bad, go ahead and install it. And even better, slipstream it.
I did, and my SP2 is working fine. No problems

I'd only worry about SP2 when having to deal wih a pc that has an old, cranky XP installation, or that cannot have downtime for any reason. In your case, installing SP2 should be relatively painless plus you can easily revert it (or even reinstall XP, should it be necessary).
