DVD-ROM Driver Problem

Okay, I have a HP desktop with XP Home loaded. The DVD-ROM drive is flagged in DM with the error "Windows cannot load the driver for this device. The driver is either corrupted or missing", or something to that end. Now, I remove it from DM and reboot, but I get the same message when it tries to install it again. It is recognized upon bootup, so I don't think the drive is faulty. What gives? Could the default Windows driver be corrupted?

Maybe. What would I do to fix the problem from a repair install? It sounds stupid, but I've never had to do a repair install, and I really haven't the faintest clue what to do from there. That's my problem: I know a whole lot about a few things, and a whole lot less about everything else.

I wouldn't suggest a repair just yet just for a drive driver.

Remove the driver, but don't reboot. Then try to reinstall the driver.

Boot from the XP cd.
The first option to do a repair of XP is the console and you will not be using that.
Keep going till you get to the screen that says Install. There in addition to the Install option there will also be the repair option, press 'R'.
That's the one you want.
The only thing that could trip you up is that some of those recovery disks can only reformat so a quick trip to the HP site to check things out is probably in order.

I already tried that, same result. Thanks for the help, I thought you meant use the Repair console, and I didn't know what to do from there for a corrupted driver. I think I'll look for maybe an updated driver, or something online I can download before I do the Repair install, but if it comes to that, it comes to that. Thanks again, I'll let you know how it turns out.
