Cannot delete partition on my primary HDD

After typing the letter "D" to delete the partition on my primary Hard drive (to reinstall winXP) a message appears, "set up is unable to perform the requested operation on the selected partition. This partition contains temporary set up files that are required to complete the installation. Can anyone please help me as I am still new to computers. Thanks
A Newbie...

Hello and welcome to PC Mech,

you can't format or delete the partition where windows is installed from within windows itself.
To accomplish this, boot from the Windows XP CD, so that Windows setup will start. Follow the instructions on the screen. After a couple of minutes you will be asked where to install Windows to, and the partitions will be shown. That is the time for you to either choose the partition and format it on the following screen, or delete that partition and create a new one.
