upgrade from win98 to winxp and then some

Hello all....I need to upgrade a pc(not mine) from win98 to winxp. I thought that there was a way to do this without having to pay full price on a new OS, is this true?

Also transferring data from an old hard drive with 98 on it to a new hard drive with XP on it wouldn't be a problem?

Thanks for the help

They sell an upgrade edition of XP, but I would just go with an OEM full version for about the same price.

Cool

You can upgrade using the XP upgrade version. With 98 running, pop in the CD and take off.

You can also do a clean install using a upgrade CD (preferred method in my opinion) if you have a full version of a qualifying OS on a CD. Boot with the XP CD and when it ask, pop in the WIN98 CD. It will verify it and ask for the XP CD and continue with fresh install.

Yes XP can read the data WIN98 creates. WIN98 uses FAT32. XP uses FAT32 or NTFS (preferred). Even if you load as NTFS it will still read FAT32.

Early on when XP first came out and I still had a dual boot XP/98 system, I had the same problem. It was mostly disks I had burned though, but I would put in a cd and xp couldn't read it, then reboot to 98 and it would read it fine, so I knew there were some quirks with xp reading disks. I do believe some of the later updates have taken care of this problem though..

If you haven't purchased yet and are doing a fresh install I would suggest that you get a full OEM version. My earlier reply assumed that you already had the XP upgrade, but reading your latest reply I don't think you have purchased yet. If that is the case get a full version if planning on doing a fresh install. The full OEM version of XP Home is cheaper than the retail upgrade version at Newegg.

Thumbs up

Your right, I haven't purchased the OS yet.

I will have to order the full OEM version of XP since it is cheaper (thanks for the link).

So I will do a fresh install and then data transfer....soon as I get the stuff

Thanks Confused
