promise ata ultra controller and xp

Does anyone know about a problem with promise ata controllers and xp? Our machine won't boot until we unplug the hard drive cable from the controller and then replug it in. Then it will boot up. Have tried to update the drivers and that didn't help. Any help? I'm thinking about just re installing windows but I hate the hassel.

you must install the driver first before connecting the drive to the controler.

I am useing it on several systems with xp and have had only one problem,
the drives must be the same brand

Do you just have one drive?

I have a Promise raid card that won't boot if I plug in my external usb drive. Been to lazy to look for a solution since I don't use the ext much.

What Promise card is it ? I have the Ultra100TX2 and I have no problem at all. Works fine, even when an external USB drive is being used.

The drives don't have to be the same brand either. Right now I am running an IBM and a Maxtor drive on the Promise.

What type of computer do you have? If you have a Dell with a single page BIOS you can get this problem. I had the same problem with a SIIG card, got a Promise, and problem persisted. If you have a Dell post back and I'll write out the fix.

your correct, I miss stated that, I ment to say they must be the same brand on each port.
example you cannot run a wd and maxtor on one port together.
I have 4 drives, two wd on one port and two maxtors on the second port.
they will not work if mixed.
I am using the same controler as rj

Thanks for the replys. It is a Dell, I put a new hard drive in it and loaded windows xp, it was running 98se. I ordered a new promise card: CONTROLLER|PROMISE ULTRA133 TX2 which comes with drivers for xp. But please be patient with me and explain how to go about replacing the card and loading the drivers. Do I load the drivers, then replace the card or the other way around. I really do appreciate the help.

I have looked all over for the CD and pamphlet that came with the card, but can't find it. It seems to me the installation was straight forward. Didn't you get installation instructions with the card? You don't say what Dell computer you have, but this worked on my 4600. It was actually a fix Dell came up with some years ago for an older model. Once you get the card installed, try this if you still have problems, can't hurt:

If you have a problem with IDE Devices detecting in the Dell Single Page BIOS, try the reset procedure listed below:
Boot to system setup. Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock, Num Lock,
Press ALT+E then ALT+F then ALT+B
IDE devices should redetect on reboot.
