Probably some hidden Windows directory. If you go to add/remove you can see a list of all updates that have been installed. It's probably just the case that it doesn't really save the downloads but just integrates them into OS so you never really 'see' them.

I do not beleive that they are saved, just executed - but you can get them as files to burn to disk. These instructions were posted before the windows update page was changed in the last couple of weeks so it will need some tweaking to make it work....
Open the Windows Update page. Select Windows Update Catalog. If it's not there, open Personalize Windows Update, check "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also," and click the Save Settings button. The Windows Update Catalog will give you access to all the updates. Select "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems," then choose Windows XP SP1 as the Operating System, a language, and click on Search. Select Critical Updates and Service Packs. Add each upgrade you want, then go to the download basket. Type, or press the browse button to locate a place on your Hard drive to download the updates into. You will be able to download the upgrades and burn them to a CD. edit - here is the url for the old update page that has the links mentioned above http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp

They ARE being saved, though only temporarily. There's an empty hidden folder called "WUtemp" on your hard disk, it's empty now because Windows deletes the patches after they're installed.
