I let my notebook upgrade to SP2 and can no longer access the local network or the internet. We have four PCs that are on a wireless network sharing a DSL internet connection. All PCs run Zone Alarm, the notebook uses McAfee AV.
I selected to turn off the XP firewall during installation in favor of Zone Alarm. When I didn't have access to the net, I then turned off Zone Alarm. Nothing seems to make any difference. Wireless card says it is connected with good signal strength. Any suggestions except the obvious ( "next time don't fix it if it isn't broken")

What network card and router are you using? What encryption are you using?
Have you tried removing the previous network configuration; make sure that your Wireless Zero Configuration service is started. Then use the new Wireless network setup wizard from your control panel and create a new connection. Make sure that you arent using automatic WPA key generation but manual as is common with most router-NIC configurations. |

More info on config
No encryption just MAC filtering - I could never get the network to work with WEP or WPA.
WAP/router is a D-Link DI624 Notebook uses a Netgear WG511T |

Try my previous suggestion of creating with the network config wizard. Might I suggest using WPA. I know from personal experience as well that SP2 has had huge improvements for me with WPA with the same router. MAC filtering only prevents people from gaining access to your router; it doesnt prevent people from "looking" into those packets of data that you broadcast so freely. MAC filtering was never intended as a wireless security measure - it is an access restriction.

I was in the process of trying your suggestion and had completed getting the other three computers using WEP (they won't all do WPA but I think I can upgrade the firmware to do this on some other rainy day). I decided to enable WEP on the recently upgraded notebook and it immediately started working. Apparently, SP2 won't allow an unencrypted network which I suppose is nice but it sure would be nice to be informed by the security system.
Anyway, thanks for the help. |

Thank you for the followup. Not to be pushy, but I would definitely check out WPA (DI 624 supports WPA w/TKIP; which is expressedly used by the new SP2 WPA supplicant as well.
Anyway, WEP is better than nothing. Cheers |
