Lost Ability to Store Cookies?
Gary,
Sorry about taggin' onto Dalton's thread. Ok, I'm not on my home PC where the problem with cookies is, but I will check the things you said. I had played with the Privacy/Security settings already, but it didn't seem to help. However, I will check my antispyware software for how it's handling cookies. I am running Win98SE on the PC with the problems. |

Thanks Mesaeus for your comment. Yes, I have ZoneAlarm. Perhaps the last update installed something that interferes with my cookies. It hasn't been a problem before -- I've had the free version for years. But there was an update recently...
The settings for cookies were not set up per the suggestions in ViruScan's Help File. So I adjusted my security/privacy settings in IE per the recommendations. I just left this board (w/o shutting down my browser), came back & was logged in. Then I shut down the browser & came back to this forum & I was still logged in. But it's not working on my start page, which I'm having to sign into every time. So I'll have to play with it some more, I guess. Thanks for your input & suggestions. Some progress has been made. I usually just turn off cookie control in ZoneAlarm, it's more trouble than it's worth. If you want to avoid "bad" cookies, install and use SpywareBlaster, ZoneAlarm interferes too much. In fact you might also want to turn of ad blocking in ZoneAlarm too, I've seen it cause other problems. ZoneAlarm is a fine firewall, but any extra functionality doesn't work too good.
Edit : I just notice you're using the free version, which won't have the cookie control activated. Never mind, it's probably something else. Still, try stopping ZoneAlarm and check if the problem suddenly goes away or not. |

[I've been busy, busy, and then busy - sorry to not respond for so long]
By any chance, did you update ZoneAlarm to a version "5"? (5 followed by a string of various numbers?) If you browse briefly over in the Security forum, you'll notice quite a few threads with ZoneAlarm 5 issues. You can try reverting to ZoneAlarm 4.5, for which glc was kind enough to leave the download link posted on that forum, and I'll paste it here just in case you want to try that & see if it helps: http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/fre...45_594_000.exe ... and the link to that ZoneAlarm thread is http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=100616 I use and am very impressed with how well version 4.5 ZoneAlarm works. I'm sure that given enough time, they'll have an update for the version 5 troubles. Till then, see if 4.5 restores your IE to normal. . . . Gary [. . . and, P.S. ---> don't worry about the tagging along. I still feel like a newbie to how forums work, and it's been a few years now!] Last edited by GaryRouth; 09-11-2004 at 03:53 AM. |
