Safe mode

I an running Windows XP SP1. I used to be able to boot into safe mode; today I can't boot into any of the three safe mode choices. When I try, the system just reboots as if I was doing a cold reboot. How can I troubleshoot this?

Have you tried going to start>run typing msconfig and there in the boot.ini section about half way down, put a check in the box beside safe mode and then restart your rig, dont know if this way will help you but give it a try.

I tried your idea and it almost caused a disaster. Altering the boot.ini file caused the computer to automatically try to go into safe mode with each start and when it tries to go into safe mode it reboots causing a deadly cycle. Fortunately, I had an emergency XP floppy disk which I was able to use to break the boot cycling. My problem is not getting the safe mode to start, it's that it reboots the computer each time instead of going into safe mode.

Problem solved with an idea from the PC Q&A forum. I had Nero InCD on my system but not active yet it installs a thread automatically that wasn't allowing safe mode. I uninstalled InCD and my safe mode boots fine.

You may have something else going on also, because when I want to go into safe mode the way I described to you earlier is the way I do it,then after I have finished I go back into msonfig >boot.ini and check boot up normaly.I have had no problems doing this on numerous occaisions.

eldon, the problem was that safe boot caused him to reboot. Your suggestion will cause a safe boot every single reboot until the option is changed back again in msconfig. So you actually caused him to continually reboot without a possibility to change it. Pressing F8 is much safer because you have to do it manually each time.

I just did a format today because I was stuck in safe boot. A vicious cirlcle of booting and restarting. I wanted to go into and delete a Trojan horse that was active after a start up and could not be deleted, after trying to fix the safe boot, I said "What the heck, might as well format."

I needed an excuse to do a clean install anyway, it's been over 9 months.

Guess I should make an XP floppy incase it happens again someday.
