Saving your settings takes too long

I have been trying to figure out why it takes so long for my network of computers to logoff/shutdown. The computers are Win2k with Novell on them. I have a dozen or so Reg hacks that run everytime I login and it doesn't seem to slow until I login as a cetain user with all of the Reg hacks. I don't know what to check or how to make it so it is fast again.

Any tips?? Ideas?? all are welcome.

Here's another reg hack for ya.

Speed up network (LAN) browsing in Win2K/XP
Open the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE)

Rename the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\Software
\Microsoft
\Windows
\CurrentVersion
\Explorer
\RemoteComputer
\Namespace
\{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

For example, you can rename it to:

DISABLED {xxD6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

This change prevents the browsing computer from checking for scheduled tasks on the remote machine before connecting, which is apparently the reason for the slowness.

You can check this Knowledge Base article for further reference:

Question

Thanks for the Reg Hack!

I am still having issues though. It didn't fix it Anymore ideas? Someone mentioned something about the background/display that could make it do that but he didn't have any specific info on how to check that. Is there a way to watch just what it is saving when it says "saving your settings" when you log off?

Again thanks for any input!!

Do each work station connect to more than one networked printer?

not sure if it is related, but if you are talking about the 'applying personal settings' thing at startup, we had a problem with that in our office network, we had a tech come in and he said it had to do with the computer trying to resolve DNS at startup and that our server was not properly configured for DNS (win2003 server). He did that and it went away.

No clue what he did...but it worked..heh.

well, I personally maintain a network of 210 computers. They are all running the same software/operating systems and most of them do not print at all. They have some small printers and label machines on some of them but that is all and they are all local printers. We have business computers that do all of the printing and reports etc.

New developments include:

When I log in as workstation only it shuts down in about a min. When I log into the network it takes anywhere from 3 mins to 6 mins to shut down. I was thinking maybe mapped drives or something might be causing this but I don't know what else it would be.

Thanks for all of the tips so far!! Lets keep em coming
