Check the autoexec.bat file and see if it is in there, and if so remove it..

I believe you can disable the forced scandisk in the advanced section of MSCONFIG.

Win98's FAT32 can use all of the drives, it's just that ScanDisk can't (since it's 16-bit) http://support.microsoft.com/default...06&Product=w98 [... For that matter, newer versions of fdisk are necessary too, for drives over 64gb...]

After you remove scandisk from autoexec.bat, or from the Registry key HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunOnce (...you can also check in the Run key), if you need to check the disks in the future, you'll have to use a different tool.

The "Not enough memory" message is also related to the size of the drives - only for ScanDisk and for Defrag, it's often the cluster size that's the problem http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=229154 ... You can bypass the MS solution of purchasing and installing XP by using smaller partitions on those larger drives . . . [much in the same way we used to have to divvy up the drives to 2gb partitions in the Win95 (original version) days]
. . . Gary

late edit: just saw your post, glc - the nice thing about using that checkbox in msconfig is that it works for both the present and future situations: good idea.
