Problem after Enum trick
Hello all
![]() Yesterday, I upgraded my MB, processor, and ram. I did the Enum trick prior to the swap, and when I booted w98, everything installed fine except PCI System Management Bus. I have tried over and over to reinstall the driver for it, but it cant be found on the Asus CD or my cab files. I am assuming that also because of this, I have no sound, although the drivers for my sound are installed. The device manager shows the PCI SMB has no conflicts. Any thoughts? TIA |

You missed one driver - the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility.

Thanks for the assistance GLC, the problem with the PCI SMB is now fixed. It didn't, unfortunately, fix my sound problem. I did uninstall and reinstall the drivers, but still the same problem remains. Since it's on 98 and not my main OS, I guess I can live without it. Again, thanks for the help

. . . did you uninstall and reinstall the sound drivers before or after you added the Intel Chipset drivers from glc's link? ... If you only tried prior to running the chipset utility, try the sound drivers from glc's 2nd link again. [Of course, if you don't need the sound, then you don't really have to do anything!]

I uninstalled and reinstalled the sound drivers after the chipset drivers. The device manager shows no problems with sound, and the Soundmax program loads at startup. However, when I check the multimedia properties in control panel, everything on the audio and midi tabs is greyed out, and on the sound properties, I can't play any of the sounds assigned (play button greyed out).

Search around a bit, it might be that if you uninstall the current driver and try a different version things will go better. Sometimes if I can't get a WDM driver to behave, especially for Win98se, I'll go to the older sort, the .vxd type. Asus might have both available.
The sound works for XP & 2K, right? ...that does seem to point to either an older "ghost" driver causing trouble [which you could check by booting into Win98's Safe Mode & checking what's listed under the Sound devices in Device Manager (and removing anything that shouldn't be there)], or it could simply be that either the driver isn't an exact match, or the download ran into problems. Win98/98se are both pretty accomodating for sound devices, I'd bet you can get it working without too much trouble. |
