External XP commands
Hey guys,
Are these correct? fixmbr = Used to fix the Master Boot Record in the boot sector on the Hard Drive. fixboot = Used to fix or rewrite the boot sector on the Hard Drive. scandisk = Used to scan the Hard Drive for any viruses and/or errors. format (followed by the desired volume label with an : at the end. NOT an external command used in XP) = Obviously used to format a volume on the Hard Drive (usually always the volume labeled as C: ) and wipes all data off, ready for a fresh install of an OS. The above are the only external commands (except the format command which I just remembered is only internal for XP) that I know from memory that I know for sure that are used only with XP. You can only use the "format" command, without the quotation marks, while you're actually inside and running XP. Or if you're just about to put the XP CD in for a fresh install of the OS, the XP CD formats your Hard Drive for you before letting you install XP. Is that all correct too? Does anybody know of any good site that gives you a complete A-Z list of external commands only used for XP? I tried searching for a few but nothing of what I was looking for turned up. Does anyone have a link or if possible, can anyone give me a list of external commands and what they do, that are only actually used for XP? TIA... ![]() EDIT: Please don't ban me for asking all this. I always get a horrible feeling that I'll get banned for asking too many questions lol EDIT 2: Sorry for editing the post so many times. I can never always get it right on the first time.

Anyone? I'll be going to search for some sites that give lists of external XP commands. In the meantime, anything is appreciated

Scandisk does not scan for viruses, only file system errors (and bad sectors if you use the /r switch).

Thanks for that correction glc. I had a feeling that that wasn't right, so I just took the best logical guess for it.
EDIT: So apart from that one mistake, are all the rest correct? |

you cannot format the system volume while the O/S is in use. Hence, if you installed windows to C: you cannot goto CMD and type format C: as it will give you an error. I assume by external commands you mean via run>cmd and going to the command line? Or are you talking about putting the XP CD in and going to the recovery console?

I'm talking about commands that you don't see in the Comand Prompt when you type cmd. You see a whole list of commands within XP when you type in Help and then hit enter while in Command Prompt. Those are the internal commands in XP. You know, the commands that you might use at a blank screen boot-up or something like that, fixmbr, one command that I stated that is external because you don't see it in the list of commands that Command Prompt gives you while inside XP.
Lol, sorry if I've seriously confused anybody up to this point. Last edited by Gizmo; 09-13-2004 at 02:21 PM. |

My apologies, Redfallon. Just took the time to re-read your post and noticed the mention of the XP CD being used as a recovery console. So there are no real external commands in XP? In any major case, you just use the recovery console on the XP CD?
You can see exactly how long I've been working with DOS based OS's can't ya
