reloading XP Home Edition errors

I was trying to install the new XP SP2 patch over the past few days and would get to where it was trying to create the sp2.cab file and then crash. I've had problems with this machine in the past so I thought I'd just try and do an upgrade again to see if that would help thinking that after that I'd do the sp2 upgrade. Now I'm unable to get through even doing the upgrade (this happened before as well, but...) without the machine crashing. This pc is about 5 years old with an AMD 450 cpu in it. It has 386 MB memory and two hd - an original ibm 16 gb and a new one i installed about 6 months ago a WD 40 gb drive.

At this point the upgrade program (new install) has deleted any necessary files to boot up with so can't do a system restore (should have tried that first, but...). There's not a lot on this machine - used mainly by my wife now that I just completed building my own but would still like to be able to use it.

Any suggestions as to what to do? Is it possible the cpu is flaking out?

Thanks,

try doing a clean install if you don't have data you need. Start off by booting of the cd and then doing the setup. I am sure that will work. OS upgrades are always bad. imop
