IE status bar weird in XP
Whenever I run IExplorer in 98, the status bar always seems to come up like it's supposed to, whether it's the first time or every time I hit Ctrl+N. However, my XP computer will only show it the first time I bring up IE, but everytime I hit Ctrl+N I have to immediately hit Ctrl+V and then B for it to show. Is there a way to make the status bar show without having to manually bring it up (like in 98)? thanks

It might just be that the option got unchecked in your toolbar options menus. From the "View" item in your IE toolbar, go a few items down to "Status Bar" and click once to checkmark it.
If that doesn't do it, post again with your results. . . . Gary |

Clicking on status in view is the same thing as hitting Alt+V,B (sorry, meant Alt, not Ctrl). Could it be some kind of registry thing or is there a setting in IE that I don't know about?

Just for curiousity's sake, if you use the toolbar instead of the keyboard shortcut, and replace the Status Bar checkmark - you're saying it reverts to no status bar for each new window? ---and does it then not show the Status Bar in the original window either, after a reboot? Also see if making the change, then rebooting, makes it stay.
I have IE6 on Win98se, Win2000, & WinXP right now, and the status bar stays put no matter how many IE windows I open, nor whether I reboot - so I'm thinking it's possibly not XP itself . . . (just an IE issue?) Of course, the status bar disappears if you use the "Full Screen" (F11) option, but then so does the taskbar. And it all comes back with a tap of F11. If you have an antispyware program running on your XP machine, it's possible that you've locked your IE settings down somewhat [some antispyware software does this to prevent browser hijacks]. You can check in your software's settings for that. SpyBot has fairly powerful lockdown tools, you have to look carefully for them, but the help files are pretty good. If on the other hand you Don't have antispyware tools installed on the XP machine, you could have a pest onboard. Both AdAware and SpyBot's recent versions are available over at download.com. If you find a pest (or other solution), post it here so that others with cranky status bars can learn the fix. I'm also curious to see how it comes out. I'll look around a little tomorrow morning if it's still not fixed yet. . . . Gary |
