Some programs like Apache or IIs run on port 80. If they are installed and running the port is open. If you want to make them available to the outside world, then you would open a port on your router if you had one or open up a port in Windows Firewall if you are using it. It would be the same for snmp on port 161. If you installed a snmp server and it running, port 161 is open but you may have to open it to the world.

Some things to keep in mind are that some ISP's block port 80 to prevent you from running a webserver. Also by opening ports to the outside world, you are also increasing your security risk so be careful about what you are doing.

Cool

I have a customer who is running scanning software on their MFP over a local nw. The sw uses port 80 (HTTP) and 161 (SMNP). Its been running fine.
when they installed SP2, the ports closed. No nw scanning could take place.
I am not that familiar with XP but I know that is the problem.
What are the steps to open those two ports again?
Thanks
