Interesting XP SP2 Problem

Still investigating this one to see if it is XPSP2 or other. Installed SP2, ran for a week without issue. Removed Norton AV 2003. Installed AVG Free Edition. Took ages to load Windows, then screen would lock up. Rebooted several times with same scenario. Booted into safe mode, uninstalled AVG and turned firewall off. Rebooted into Windows. Windows loaded fine but my NIC was missing from Device Manager. Rebooted still no NIC. Replaced NIC under assumption that it was bad. Booted into Windows. Hardware wizard comes up telling me it has found new NIC and installs drivers and tells me that my new hardware is ready for use. Go into device manager and there is no NIC. Rebooted and no nic.

Haven't played with it much since then but kind of odd and not sure if it was uninstalling Norton or SP2 or the combo of the two.

Try booting in safe mode and go to Device manager. Zap any and all nics that you find. Reboot..
