Question Service Pack 2 and Updates

Hi,
I just did a fresh install of Windows XP Home with service pack 1 and had a CD with Service Pack 2 so I just started installing it, after it loaded the files and rebooted it hung on the Windows screen with the green scrolling bar. I couldn't even boot into safe mode, first time that has ever happened! Do you have to get the updates for Service Pack 1 before you install service pack 2? I have installed service pack 2 a few times and never had any trouble, so this is the only thing different that I can think of that I've done.
TIA

The way I understand it is that SP2 contains all of SP1 and then the updates for SP2. You shouldn't have to install SP1 first.

You can just install SP2. It contains all previous updates, too.

The best would be to slipstream SP2. Too bad you already did a fresh install .. but well, next fresh install is coming for sure

Thanks guys, what does slipstream SP2 mean. I have already reinstalled and am ready to install SP2. So you're saying I don't have to update SP1? I don't want to reinstall again.

Cool

You do not need to install SP1. SP2 includes SP1 and any critical updates released after SP1.

Slipstream is incorporating SP2 into your XP so that if in the future you reload you would just use your slipstreamed CD to install XP along with SP2 all at once.

Thanks for link on slipstreaming confused. I know what you are saying and I agree that's what I thought. That I wouldn't need to do the updates however XP froze beyond repair when I did it. The disk I'm using has SP1 already on it so I have no choice but to install SP1. Then when I immediately installed SP2 from the CD windows froze, would installing SP2 from the update site be better than using the CD?
TIA

No. SP2 includes all the fixes of SP1 as well. So it doesn't matter whether you have Windows XP Original, or Windows XP with slipstreamed SP1. You will be able to slipstream SP2.

And SP2 is SP2, no matter where you get it. But the CD is better, coz you already have it. Via Windows Update it would take quite a while.
Use the CD, slipstream SP2, do a real clean install with it, and then all should work well.

SP2 is good. At least slipstreamed. Haven't had problems with the afterwards installation either, but have used that only for a week.

If an SP2 installation fails, it's pretty much because the computer was messed up before. Therefore the slipstream installation is the best. It is the cleanest.
