Please Help
I have an old pc running windows xp pro (a registered copy). I have just built a new pc (different board, proccessor, AGP card). I have tested the new pc with a new hard drive and a fresh installation of windows and everything works but of course I am reminded that I have 30 days to activate the installation.
How can I: a) transfer my old hard drive with all the software and data to my new pc? I have tried just moving it across but windows will not start b) get my new combination (new pc + old windows installation) to be accepted by microsoft as I would like to get windows updates as before, given that my copy of windows will still be on one machine only (assuming "a" above can be sorted out). I believe some sort of code will be generated for each machine/software combination. c) do the same registration transfer in "b" above for other software in my old pc d) achieve all these without many phone calls as international call charges are very high where I am right now. Thank you. |

there is a file which logs all your hardware specifications and creates a log which XP uses to determine whether or not you have changed system specs. i believe the maximum is 3 changes to any hardware device before windows XP asks to be registered again.
I found how to resolve this in various ftp searches with Microsoft as a keyword however i doubt this is entirely legal and therefore will not post any specific info which may point you to those sites, or how to actually perform the operation. Sorry about that but the forum has rules and i do believe in following them as this is a v good forum to use happy searching

Just move your hard drive across, then do a repair reinstallation of XP over the top. Reactivation will most likely be required, and you will have to do this by phone if the last activation was done less than 120 days prior.
