Angry XP says NEW 56k modem is already in use?

Hello!
OEM modem took one for the team. Maybe lighting strike...
Uninstalled old card & drivers using Add/Remove prog.
Installed new modem, XP Wizard poped up & I cancelled it. The lower task bar noted new hardware installed. I then Installed the new modem drivers from included CD-ROM.
No conflicts in device manager.
Device is enabled & working.
But when I try to dial - Message "Modem is already in use or not configured properly". I even tried a different PCI slot - same results.

Help...

Well here's the update, Removed all(2) PCI cards.
I've reformated(NO Errors) & installed XP-PRO onto the HDD several times.
No other drivers were even loaded yet. Installed the Modem card & software(looks like a good install so far with NO conflicts in Dev.Mangr)

Created a new dialer, entered a phone no. & tried to dial out.
And guess what, I got the same
message that "the current modem/port is being used by another program".
I've tried all 3 PCI slots with no other cards or software installed.- same results.

Could I have a bad MOBO.
HELP...

Have you let XP install the drivers for you without using the modem disk? XP has most modem drivers built in. I only use the modem drivers on the modem install disk for 98se systems. On a new build I just install the modem, let XP find it and install the required drivers.

Hello!
I formated the HDD again. Loaded XP once more (no errors)
Made sure XP loaded o.k. - checked device manager no modems.
NO other programs or software loaded just XP.

Powered down the PC.
Then installed new 56k modem, turned on PC, desktop came up, Wizard program popped up (pressed the cancelled option) In the lower RH task bar a icon & message popped up "A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware may not work properly".
I checked device manager, It does reconize a modem but "Modem has a problem". Can't seem to manually select from a list of generic XP drivers either.

I shut down the PC & tried the modem in each(3) PCI slots with the same results.
Wasn't sure if maybe my new Modem was bad, so I tried another known good modem. Same results....

Process of elimination says new MOBO ???

Thanks!

Why are you cancelling the Wizard? That's how XP loads the driver.

Hello!
O.K. I went the Wizard route this time...
I reformated the HDD again. Reloaded XP, Rebooted & the desktop came up as normal.

The Hardware Wizard popped up & this time I wanted to select from a list of drivers. But after clicking to select manually the hardware Wizard message read "Unable to find any drivers for this device". There was no preloaded drivers to selct from in the Wizard window.
And in device manager, There is a yellow colored "?" next to PCI modem.
What could be wrong???
Thanks!

Is your XP version fully updated (not necessarily with SP2)? Quite odd that XP doesn't have the driver for your modem. What modem is it?

Hello Again!
It made sense that maybe there were no drivers on that XP-pro version I have. So I borrowed a version of XP-Home from a friend. Reformated HDD(no errors), Same results the "Unable to find any drivers for this device" message came up with no drivers to choose from in the "Hardware Wizard".

I did reformatt the HDD again, Without the modem, powered up with modem in different PCI slot. selected wizard, selected disk. & installed modem hardware without any errors. Still doesn't dial out. (No conflicts in Dev. Manager). same message as before.

The modem I replaced was a generic OEM card, The replacement was a BEST-DATA series-one 56K-V.92/V.44 Model no. 56HP. I purchased it from OfficeMax locally. The box states it's 98,ME,2000 & XP compatible.

The reason I didn't load the MOBO software after XP was, the original modem message stated that "the current device was in use by another program". I thought there might be some kind of OEM fax/modem/driver software(causing the message) that would be on the MOBO disk.

I've been able to do everything internally with this MOBO (even watch DVD movies) without a glitch. But It just seems that all 3 PCI slots experience problems when you try to access anything plugged into them.

Thanks again!
