98se and SATA

Trying to make a dual boot xp/98se machine. My question is, can 98 see a SATA HDD that is *not* on a "native" controller. MY board has intel ICH5R as well as silicon image sata controllers, will 98 see (or is there any way to make it see) a SATA drive on the sil? I can get it to see the drive if I disconnect my raptors and hook the SATA up to the ICH5R. . .Not looking for a RAID array or anything on this drive, just a maxtor 60GB SATA drive I'd like to install 98se on. Thanks in advance

If you install the drivers, it should work.

How would I get the drivers installed with 98? I have them installed on my raptors for XP, but I am wanting to disconnect them and run a clean install of 98 on the extra drive. There's no way to "slip" any drivers into a 98se install is there? (like "press f6..." with XP?) Thanks for the reply RJ, and I apologize as I'm a bit dense when it comes to 98, I've been on XP for too long I guess.

No, there is no way. Windows 98 Setup was way better than the stoneaged 2K/XP "floppy-demanding" Setup. Windows 98 doesn't care if it has drivers or not. It will see the drive and install anyway. You can install the drivers once you are in Windows.

It has always been the case with Windows 9x installation an a drive that is hooked up to a controller. Only difference now is that yours is SATA, but it should work the same.

Hmmm. . .I unhooked my raptors and left the SATA plugged into the Sil controller ports, and setup said "no HDD installed". I plugged it into the ICH5R and it saw it and proceeded through setup. I don't remember if I tried fdisk'ing the partition in between switchin controllers or not. Maybe that's all it was. I will try again after work or tomorrow. Again thanx for the input. I thought it was just 98 didn't like SATA drives.

Leave it hooked up to the ICH5R, then install the Sil drivers. Then you can switch the drive.

Didn't think of that. Thanks G, I will play around with it some more when I get some time. I don't know how the whole boot process works, I guess XP will let me choose from the OS boot loader? I've been doing some reading, but will continue to look and see. I hope I can boot from either, being on two seperate controllers. I'll be sure and post back if (or should I say when? ) I run into more problems, or if I get it worked out.

A little update: I finally got 98se to install on the SATA drive. I guess I just had not wiped the NTFS partition (duh!) as it installed with no additional drivers or anything. Got the o/s installed, all the drivers and such worked out. Now I am unable to get my linksys 54g pci nic to work. I have tried installing the card first, then software; software first then card (recommended by linksys), as well as trying generic/windows drivers for the NIC. As yet, it says the device is working properly in device manager, but it will not connect. The linksys wifi monitor that it installs lists the card as "inactive". The activity light on the back of the nic is dimly lit, but I think it should be brigter and flashing. Any ideas from anyone? I've tried moving pci slots. The nic worked fine last time I was in my XP config. I am hoping it's just a driver/software problem. Tonite I am going to hook my raptors back in and boot into xp again to make sure it's not the card. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be happy to try anything Thanks in advance!
