Its the Dark Side!

I tried to reinstall Beyond TV today, but when it tried to install MDAC, it gave me the following error message:
"MDAC 2.8 RTM is incompatible with this version of Windows. All of its features are currently part of Windows." Then it asks to reboot the comp. found nothing to fix this in google. I tried downloading and installing MDAC 2.8 from microsoft, but it actually gave me that same error message. Any ideas? TIA, CN

You probably already saw this over on the "Read This First" seciton on the SnapStream BeyondTV forums, but it does list a couple other subsystems to download after you've done a complete uninstall (might even want to enlist a Registry Cleaner, or if you want, clean up in regedit), then try the installation again. Here's a copy-and-paste of that text:
"Visit the windows update website and INSTALL the updates listed under both the critical update section and the windows 2000/XP listing in the tree on the left side of the page, an upto date system is 99% less likely to have issues than a system with no updates and you are more than likely going to end up installing the updates working with tech support. (plus its just good security practices to keep windows upto date) If yo are receiving MDAC, ADO, MSDART, or any other database related messages: - Shutdown BTV/PVS and exit the tray icon - Perform a FULL unintstall using the add/remove wizard - Visit the following site and download the MSDAC update: MDAC Update (microsoft.com) - Visit the following site and download the MSJET update: MS JET (microsoft.com) - Visit the following site and download the .net framework 1.1: .Net Framework (microsoft.com) - Reboot the system into safe mode and logon as the Administrator account (not simply as an account with admin priveleges) then Install all 3 of the above components and reboot the machine - Start up the setup program for beyondtv and make note of any errors, if you get an error during install visit the tech support page and submit a ticket with the exact error message you get - If you still do not have data in your guide or there is still an error message contact tech support and they will work out how to fix the issue." Maybe there's a clue that will help in all that. By any chance, did you go to SP2 for XP? . . . Gary |

I do have SP2 installed. BTV was still working well after I installed it, infact, I initially installed it after installing SP2. One thing that did hit me was that I installed MS Net Framework 1.1 SP1 from Windows Update. I noticed that when I was trying to install BTV, it opens a download manager and begins downloading components. the first component it downloads is MDAC. I have a feeling its causing a conflict or something. I did try a system restore to see If i could reset things the way they were, but no dice.

Since versions seem to be upsetting it's installer, maybe something like
1) Completely uninstall BTV 2) Re-run your XP SP2 3) Re-install BTV, and whether or not it barks about MDAC, then try 4) From the start/run box, type "sfc/scannow" (without the quotes) to start a run of the XP version of System File Checker - aka "Windows File Protection". 5) Then see if it a) runs without error or b) reinstalls without error. If that doesn't do it, it might need an email to the BTV support group. It's unlikely you're the only BTV user that's seen this error (that's my guess, anyway). . . . Gary |

Actually I just found a bypass to that problem. I was browsing some other threads on that BTV forum, and somebody had a problem different than mine, but the solution gave me an idea. As i mentioned before, the installer from the CD actually downloads components from the internet, but as it turns out, Snapstream actually provides a FULL installer package, I simpy tried that, entered my License key from my CD, restored my settings, and it seems to work fine. i got no disturbances from MDAC. Thanks a bunch for those tips Gary, but i think i got it handled here.

Glad you found a solution - Nice sleuthing on the BTV. I wonder how many of their users are encountering a similiar situation? One thought: maybe you could post a note over on their forums about your experience - the error, and the remedy: I'll bet you'd have some pretty grateful BTV fellow users
