Missing associations, icons

I was using my Win 98se computer last night and all my icons are gone; they have turned into the icon for a file that has no association. The Start folders are still there but when I drill down to get into a program clicking that icon brings up the open with dialoge box.

Any suggestions????

Bring up the boot menu by tapping F8 when it's starting up, choose Command Prompt Only. When you get to the C prompt, type SCANREG /RESTORE - and choose a registry backup to restore from a date when everything was still working properly.

Then, run a full virus scan.
