Yes, you can make it bigger. Right-click on "My Computer", select Properties, Advanced tab, Performance settings, Advanced tab again. Making it larger will help, but only up to a certain point. How much physical memory do you have installed? What kind of problems are you having?

Having more installed memory to reduce the need for Virtual Memory (page file) is more important than making adjustments to the default settings. Here's a good guide from MS on how to optimize Page File. I always create a separate partition for the page file that is equal to 3 times the installed memory. For a 512Mb system, I'll use a 2Gb partition. Then the Minimum is set to 1.5 x installed memory and max to 3 x. (784 min and 1536 max) Those settings are for the page file partition. Set the min and max on the Operating System partition to 32min and 64max. (read the article for the 'Why'.)

No, making it bigger won't make things run faster unless you have problems to begin with. 640 MB of memory is a good sized amount for Windows XP, and you probably don't need a huge swap file. You can open up Task Manager and take a look at the page file usage history to see if you are coming close to maxing it out. My guess is that you aren't.

I have 512 MB of memory and a 400 MB swap file and I never come close to running out of memory.
