Lost pointer and keyboard after DX9 install

On a HP Laptop running 2k w/sp4, I installed the O/S then the updated driver for the nVidia GeForce 440 video chipset (from HP's site for that notebook) BEFORE I installed DX9 and lost the pointer and use of the keyboard.
No other drivers or s/w was installed.
I uninstalled the video driver, but no luck. As I remember you can't uninstall a DX update, correct? I don't know if it was the DX9 or installing it after the video driver where the issue lies.

I can get inro safe mode and the keyboard and pointer are ok there. Besides playing musical chairs and disabling drivers one at a time is there something else I can do?

Reformat and this time do not install video drivers or DX9 until all the other drivers your notebook needs have been installed.
I'm betting you skipped alot of stuff you should have done before the video step.
Does that notebook have special keyboard and mouse drivers ?

That's what I didn't want to do.
Someone else suggested using a dx uninstall program which I might try.
HP suggested installing the pointer and keyboard drivers, but I wanted to not do that untill I had to since it adds crap I don't want. The keyboard and pointer does have special drivers for added features I really don't want/need except for the scrolling feature of the touchpad which I will install.

I didn't skip anything as far as I know, I don't know if the dx9 drivers should of been installed first or not as with older systems.

Update.................it wasn't just DX9

I did a another fresh install of 2k and the same problem occured. Very intermittent, about 50% of the time in normal boot and 10% of the time in safe mode! Yes, safe mode sometimes doesn't have th pointer and use of the keyboard.

I tried 2k, 2k w/sp3 and 2k w/sp4 and the same thing. No pattern. I contacted HP, spent a hour talking with someine in Indai (or somewhere) and got the canned answer that HP only supports the notebook the way it was shipped EVEN THOUGH there is a page of drivers on their site specifically for 2k:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...&dlc=en&os=181

I'm using M$ Config to isolate the conflict, but no luck so far.

From your description you have a hardware problem.
It could be anything from a loose connection to quietly failing part.
Is that laptop still under warranty ?

Can you borrow a copy of 2000 from anyone as an experiment ?
If that copy will load correctly, no keyboard-mouse problems, then take yours back to the store, or mail it to HP, and get a another copy.

I have different copies that are bootable, but I don't know if they came from the same orginal CD or not. I thought about that.

A update. It SEEMS when I disable the 2 instances of the Generic CardBus Controller (the unit has a media card reader) the problem is there on every boot!
