Win 98 startup problems

My friend has a Toshiba Tecra 8000 Laptop. It has Windows 98 2nd Ed. on it. When I boot it up it goes to the Microsoft Windows 98 startup Menu giving you 6 choices how you want to start up including normal and safe mode.

When I choose normal the screen size is minimal and it only displays 16 colors. When I go into control panel and try to change the colors or screen size it asks to restart computer even when in the advanced tab under screen settings is checked stating "Apply the new color settings without restarting." When I click okay to restart the computer restarts and the changes are not made.

Also, when I try to do a registry restore it does not give me any choices to restore to. The calendar screen never appears.

I do not have a copy of windows 98, but I do have Windows ME. I was wondering if I upgraded to ME will this fix the problems? Any help is greatly appreciated. TIA

You might want to go to the Toshiba website and download the video driver for that laptop for 98SE - sounds like yours is corrupted.

I'd be very leery of upgrading that thing to ME - you may just make it worse. Toshiba doesn't support ME on that model, but they *do* support Win2000.

GLC,

Thank you very very much. The video driver was the problem. That saved me a lot of work, unnecessary work I may add. Thanks again.

The video problem is fixed. I still have the problem when I first boot up that the computer goes to the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu giving me 30 seconds to choose how to start up. What can I do so the computer doesn't go to this screen on startup? Thanks.

I went into msconfig and then clicked on startup. Nothing was checked. What are the essentials items that need to be checked? Thanks.

I believe that's in msconfig, advanced - look for a checkbox to show boot menu.

If you want to have registry backups, scanreg must be checked in the startup unless you want to only make manual backups.

In msconfig I clicked on startup and then checked scanreg. After checking only scanreg the computer seems to boot up fine. It no longer goes to the Microsoft Windows 98 startup menu. I guess checking only scanreg solved the problem. Thanks.
