XP won't boot when I use DVD-ROM drive?

Okay, I thought I had a totally different problem but it turns out that XP won't boot because of my DVD-ROM.

I've always used this drive on this system but, to install Linux, I switched it out briefly for another DVD-ROM. Anyways, XP launched its wizard to install this temporary drive so I went along with it. Now when I put back in my original DVD-ROM it won't get passed the splash screen and eventually reboots with no error. I can get into safe mode but "load last good config" and system restore haven't fixed the problem. Can anyone help?

Thanks a lot!

Assuming the drive is recognized correctly by the bios delete the drive in Device Manager.
With any luck XP will recognize it as "new hardware" after a restart and reinstall it.
