USB Driver Problems

I've been having problems with USB devices not being recognized, so I decided to reinstall the motherboard chipset drivers , which includes the USB drivers.

Somewhere in the middle of the setup, it asked me to find the file "usbechi.sys", and rather than look for it I optimistically clicked OK on the default search location, which was Windows\temp I believe. After that it continued installing but halted at 90% and stayed there for several minutes until I manually ended the program. Now whenever I try to re-run the file it does not prompt me for usbehci.sys, but it does always halt at 90%.

I have found several copies of usbehci.sys on various websites through googling, but am wary of downloading it until I know more about what I am doing.

My motherboard is an Abit IS7E. I am running Windows XP.

That's the USB 2.0 driver for the "enhanced" controller. See if this helps.

atramell- I went to the abit-usa website and downloaded the driver file, then ran it.

glc- Abit IS7E on Windows XP.

I haven't tried any of the ideas listed on the linked thread (I will soon though) but since this appears to be a problem with the USB 2.0 drivers that come with service pack 1 not matching up with the Intel USB drivers... would it be wise to try to uninstall and reinstall SP1 just to try to start the process over again?

Thanks for your help!

Having several threads going is making it tough to keep continuity, and hijacking someone else's thread is complicating it even more.

If you are not running off the original factory installed operating system on that Dell, there are drivers that must be reinstalled. If your Dell resource CD has XP drivers, you can use it. If not, you have to look for drivers on the Dell support site. The first driver I'd reinstall is the Intel chipset identification utility, and go from there.
