Curious about "svchost.exe"

Hi folks,
I'm just wondering if someone could give me a decent explination of svchost.exe (appears in Task Manager). Just a couple of things:

1. why are there usually several instances of it running?
2. why is it usually the process taking up the most memory?
3. what is it's general purpose/function?

I'm not having any problems and everything is running great, I'm just curious.
Thanks very much,
Stryker
